Safe disposal
EDITOR: As a hospice nurse, I am often with families when the need
to dispose of unused medications arises. Disposal of medications in
the trash or the sewer system has an increasingly harmful effect on
the environment.
A number of months ago, after meeting with the Petaluma water district,
Jamil Harb, who operates The Medicine Shoppe agreed to do a trial in
Petaluma and accept unused medications for proper disposal. In the first
six months he accepted and paid for the disposal of more than 500 pounds
of medication. Obviously there is a huge need for this service in Petaluma.
At that time, however, the water district backed out due to funding
issues.
I have spoken to staff at two other pharmacies in Petaluma to ask is
they will be providing this service in the future and they have no plans
to do so.
Both the Petaluma City Council (Teresa Barrett has been helpful and
supportive) and the Petaluma water district should tackle this problem
and support The Medicine Shoppe and other pharmacies in Petaluma in
providing this valuable and much needed service. I think it is short-sighted
not to make it a priority.

A Petaluma ticket
EDITOR: I am looking for elected leaders who have intelligence and
integrity and are willing to accept accountability for the decisions
they make. In this election cycle, the choice is clear and the contrasting
alternatives are well defined and apparent.
I am voting for Pamela Torliatt for supervisor. She has served as a
community leader for almost two decades, accumulating a vast wealth
of experience that will enable her to meet the challenges at the county
level.
I support David Glass for Petaluma mayor. He has a decade of successful
public service; no one else in the field has any public record.
In the City Council race, the best combination for Petaluma is Teresa
Barrett, Jason Davies and Wyatt Bunker. They have personal integrity
and strong values that will enable us to meet current challenges and
lead to success for our community.
Barrett holds developers accountable. Davies is an expert in technology
and wants clean jobs, and Bunker has the right idea about how to come
to grips with what he calls a government rewards program for city workers.
Please join me in supporting these five people for the betterment of
our community.

Thoughtful vision
EDITOR: Sane, spirited and solid are words to describe Petaluma City
Council member Teresa Barrett, who is running for re-election in November.
In her long engagement with local schools, neighborhoods and government,
she has demonstrated a rare combination of hard work and thoughtful
vision so needed in our leaders.
I love this town, and I want to see it continue being a great place
to live, with strong schools, a healthy economy and nurtured natural
resources. The future is in all of our hands, and, speaking personally,
my hand is raised in support of Teresa Barrett to help lead us in a
wise direction.

Steadfast leadership
Editor: Petaluma rate-payers recently received the city water department’s
report that Ellis Creek, our state-of-the-art water recycling facility
with open space complementing Shollenberger Park, was delivered safely,
on time and within budget. This is a remarkable accomplishment for city
government — our “largest-ever infrastructure project!”
It was undertaken with the initiative and dedication of hundreds of
Petalumans working for the common good, and with the cooperation of
the City Council as a whole — despite the no-sayers who are still
dragging out Measure U.
During the more recent, contentious struggle over Regency, the council
minority acted like a party of “no,” seeming to appease
the “get it built at all costs” sentiment, rather than challenging
their own side to recognize and deal with significant long-term problems.
Pam Torliatt, David Glass and Teresa Barrett were steadfast in providing
leadership for the whole community, improving the project and minimizing
the negative impact for future generations. They know Petaluma requires
smart growth consistent with our General Plan, quality that sustains
its economic value, and a transit orientation that capitalizes on the
tremendous investment we are making in the rail line, providing safe
streets and traffic flow.
We need their leadership!

Barrett’s record
EDITOR: Wise up, Petaluma. Vote for long-term sustainable options for
our community, not short-term corporate maneuvering. We need to re-elect
Teresa Barrett, a hardworking community woman with integrity and insight,
to the City Council.
Barrett is a longtime resident who has raised a family here and has
been working for the improvement of our community, at many levels, for
many years.
Her service on the council has been exemplary. She thoroughly researches
and understands the impact of council actions whether it is the city
budget, contracts or controversial construction projects. She courageously
never bends to political pressure from wealthy developers and businesses
that contribute money and signage to her opponents. She stands firm
against their devious lawsuits.
Barrett knows the details of the major issues facing the city and has
the vision and the guts to see that the cost of long-term mistakes isn’t
worth short-term financial gain.
